A devastating road accident in Maharashtra&rsquo;s Ratnagiri district claimed five lives late Monday night when a speeding SUV first rammed into an auto-rickshaw and then collided with a truck. The collision took place around 10:30 pm on the Karad&ndash;Chiplun road near Pimpiri Khurd village, about 300 km from Mumbai.
According to police, the auto-rickshaw was carrying four passengers, including a child, when the SUV struck it with great force. The impact was so severe that the rickshaw was dragged for several meters before the SUV crashed head-on into a truck approaching from the opposite direction.
All four passengers in the rickshaw and the SUV driver died on the spot. The deceased were identified as Ibrahim Ismail Lone (65), Niyaz Mohammad Hussain Saiyyad (50), Shabana Niyaz Saiyyad (40), and 4-year-old Haider Niyaz Saiyyad, all residents of the Parvati area in Pune. The SUV driver, 28-year-old Asif Hakimuddin Saifi, had travelled from Uttarakhand to Maharashtra but tragically lost his life in the crash.
Police teams rushed to the site, recovered the bodies, and shifted them to Chiplun Rural Hospital for postmortem. While the exact cause of the accident is still under investigation, officials suspect overspeeding and loss of vehicle control as possible reasons.
The accident has once again raised concerns about road safety in the Konkan region, where narrow highways and reckless driving often lead to fatal mishaps. Police have registered a case and are continuing their probe.
