The death toll from a roof collapse at a dwelling unit attached to a dargah in the Humayun&rsquo;s Tomb complex climbed to seven on Saturday, with the Delhi Police registering a negligence case over the rain-related incident.
According to officials, three women and four men lost their lives after the roof of the single-storey two-room structure adjoining Dargah Patte Wali caved in around 3.51 p.m. The collapse is suspected to have been caused by a weak foundation and water seepage.
Police have lodged an FIR at Nizamuddin Police Station under sections relating to death by negligence, endangering life or personal safety, and negligent construction practices.
The deceased were identified as Moinuddin, Anita Saini, Swaroop Chand, Meena Arora, Monu Arora, and Arif, while the injured included Mohammad Shameem, Aryan, Gudiya, and Rafat Parveen. Victims were rushed to AIIMS Trauma Centre, Lok Nayak Hospital, and Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital.
Four fire tenders and 25 firemen were deployed for rescue operations. Teams from NDRF, DDMA, CATS Ambulance, and local police assisted in shifting the injured to hospitals.
District Magistrate Dr. Sarvan Kumar said those killed hailed from areas including Nizamuddin, Vasant Kunj Enclave, and Zakir Nagar. A mother-daughter duo from Vasant Kunj Enclave was among the dead, while one of the hospitalised men was from Nawada, Bihar.
Preliminary investigation suggests that visitors had come to meet the imam, known for preparing religious pendants (taveez), when the roof collapsed. At the time of the incident, the imam was also inside the building.
Eyewitnesses described hearing a loud rumble before rushing to help those trapped under the debris. Rescue officials noted that 10&ndash;12 people were initially trapped, and six died while being taken to hospital.
The tragedy follows two other rain-related incidents in Delhi on Thursday a motorcyclist was killed after a tree fell in Kalkaji, and two children died when a wall collapsed in Basant Nagar.
