A Booth Level Officer (BLO) in West Bengal&rsquo;s North 24 Parganas district has been hospitalised after suffering a heart attack while carrying out Special Intensive Revision (SIR) duties. The officer, identified as Sushanta Tikadar, was found unconscious at his home on Monday afternoon, surrounded by voter enumeration documents.
According to police officials, Tikadar was completing SIR-related work for Part No. 106 in Gopalnagar-1 Gram Panchayat under the Bangaon area. Family members said he was updating enumeration forms at home when he suddenly became unwell and collapsed.
He was initially taken to Bangaon Sub-divisional Hospital but was later shifted to Kalyani Gandhi Memorial Hospital in Nadia district as his condition required advanced care. He continues to undergo treatment there.
His daughter, Shreya Tikadar, said that his health remains fragile even two days after the cardiac episode. The family believes the pressure and workload linked to the SIR exercise contributed to his deteriorating condition, noting that his blood pressure had spiked just before he collapsed.
This incident comes amid rising concerns over the strain placed on BLOs. Within the past week, two female BLOs allegedly died by suicide due to workload stress, another suffered a cerebral attack, and yet another BLO reportedly had a heart attack in South 24 Parganas&rsquo; Gosaba region.
The growing number of health emergencies among BLOs has intensified discussions around the demanding nature of SIR duties and the need for better support systems for field-level election staff.
