The All India Medical Students Association (AIMSA) has appealed to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, seeking urgent intervention to ensure the safety of Indian medical students currently stranded in Bangladesh amid rising political unrest and growing anti-India sentiment.
In a letter sent to the Prime Minister on Monday, the association said it has been receiving alarming messages from Indian students and their families, highlighting unsafe living conditions and mounting uncertainty. According to AIMSA, the prevailing situation has caused widespread fear, anxiety and emotional distress among students pursuing medical education in Bangladesh and their relatives back home.
The association stressed that Indian students studying abroad rely on the Indian government for protection during times of crisis. It urged the Prime Minister to coordinate closely with the Ministry of External Affairs and Indian diplomatic missions in Bangladesh to ensure immediate safety measures for affected students.
AIMSA also called for enhanced on-ground support through the Indian Embassy and related missions, along with clear, timely and transparent communication with students and their families to prevent panic and misinformation. Emphasising the seriousness of the situation, the association requested that the issue be treated as a top-priority emergency to safeguard the students&rsquo; lives, dignity and academic future.
The appeal comes amid escalating tensions in Bangladesh following renewed protests marked by anti-India slogans. The unrest has been linked to political developments stemming from last year&rsquo;s July Uprising, which resulted in the removal of former prime minister Sheikh Hasina.
Tensions intensified further after the killing of Osman Hadi, convenor of Inquilab Mancha and a prominent figure associated with the July Uprising. Hadi was shot at close range in Dhaka&rsquo;s Bijoynagar area on December 12 while travelling in a rickshaw. He was later airlifted to Singapore for advanced medical treatment but succumbed to his injuries on December 18.
Following his death, protests erupted across parts of Dhaka, with demonstrators demanding justice. In response, Bangladesh&rsquo;s interim government, headed by Chief Adviser Muhammad Yunus, announced a national day of mourning on December 20.
