The Indian Army&rsquo;s Agniveers displayed outstanding bravery and efficiency during Operation Sindoor, playing a key role in India&rsquo;s counter-terror and defence operations following the deadly April 22 terror attack in Pahalgam.
Approximately 3,000 Agniveers were deployed across various roles &mdash; from frontline combat units to support functions such as gunners, fire control operators, and radio communication specialists. Their performance was critical in both offensive strikes and in intercepting hostile air threats.
These young soldiers, many in their early twenties, manned advanced weapons systems and vehicles, including the indigenous Akashteer Air Defence Control System. Their swift coordination led to the detection and neutralisation of multiple enemy drones, effectively shielding Indian military and civilian targets from retaliatory strikes.
Operation Sindoor was launched in response to the brutal killing of 26 tourists in Pahalgam. The Indian Army targeted terror infrastructure in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK), destroying nine major camps and eliminating over 100 militants. Care was taken to avoid civilian casualties, but Pakistan&rsquo;s response included missile and drone strikes.
India retaliated firmly, targeting key Pakistani military posts and air defence infrastructure. Agniveers were central to these operations, holding their ground and executing their roles under intense pressure.
Defence analysts have praised their combat readiness and discipline, highlighting how their performance mirrors that of seasoned troops. The success of Operation Sindoor has reinforced the credibility of the Agnipath recruitment scheme, designed to bring youthful energy and rapid training into the armed forces.
