As Gujarat eyes hosting the Commonwealth Games in 2030 and the Olympic Games in 2036 in Ahmedabad, the city has already begun laying the groundwork by staging a series of prestigious international sporting events over the coming years.
In 2025 alone, Ahmedabad will take the global spotlight with three major competitions. The Commonwealth Weightlifting Championship will be hosted at the Naranpura Sports Complex from August 24-30, drawing over 350 athletes from 29 nations. Soon after, the Asian Aquatics Championship will bring together elite swimmers from countries such as China, Japan, and Korea during September and October. To round off the year, Ahmedabad will also host Group D of the AFC Under-17 Asian Cup Saudi Arabia 2026 Qualifiers at The Arena by TransStadia from November 22-30, with India set to take on Iran, Palestine, Chinese Taipei, and Lebanon.
The momentum will continue into 2026, when the city welcomes both the Asian Weightlifting Championship and the Archery Asia Para Cup &ndash; World Ranking Tournament. Looking even further, Gujarat is slated to host the World Police and Fire Games in 2029, across Ahmedabad, Gandhinagar, and Ekta Nagar (Kevadia).
India&rsquo;s official bid to stage the 2030 Commonwealth Games, with Ahmedabad proposed as the host city, has already secured approval from the Indian Olympic Association. Observers see this roadmap as a carefully crafted journey leading toward the ambitious goal of the Olympic Games in 2036.
Highlighting the city&rsquo;s preparations, Ahmedabad Urban Development Authority CEO Devang Desai said: &ldquo;Ahmedabad is not just building stadiums; it is building confidence. These upcoming events will give us the opportunity to prove that our infrastructure, logistics and hospitality can match the very best in the world. By 2030, the world will already have seen Ahmedabad deliver on multiple fronts.&rdquo;
Officials emphasize that the state&rsquo;s Sports Policy 2022-27 lies at the core of this vision. The policy has encouraged heavy investment in modern sports complexes and world-class infrastructure while also uplifting the morale of local athletes. It aligns Gujarat&rsquo;s sporting facilities with international benchmarks.
By hosting a sequence of high-profile tournaments before 2030, Ahmedabad aims to showcase its readiness and reliability, positioning itself as a strong contender not just for the Commonwealth Games, but ultimately for the Olympic stage in 2036.
