Six members of a family drowned in the Meshwa River near Kanij village in Mahemdavad taluka of Gujarat&rsquo;s Kheda district on Wednesday evening. The victims, all cousins aged between 14 and 21, were part of a family meet-up when the tragedy occurred.
The deceased have been identified as Jinal, Divya, Falguni, Dhruv, Bhumika and Mayur. According to Kheda Superintendent of Police Rajesh Gadhiya, the group, consisting of four females and two males, had entered the river to bathe when they were swept away by strong currents.
&ldquo;Six persons &mdash; four females and two males &mdash; either siblings or cousins in the age group of 14&ndash;21 went to bathe in the Meshwa River where they drowned,&rdquo; said SP Gadhiya.&nbsp;
&ldquo;The bodies of all six of them have been taken out,&rdquo; he confirmed.
Police reports indicate that the incident occurred suddenly, with the cousins beginning to yell for help after being carried away by the current. Local residents rushed to the scene and attempted rescue efforts, but were unable to save the victims.
Of the six victims, four had travelled from Ahmedabad&rsquo;s Naroda area to visit their cousins in Kanij.&nbsp;
Following reports of the incident, a team comprising Mehmadabad police and the fire brigade reached the location and launched a rescue operation.&nbsp;
Senior officials, including Mehmadabad MLA Arjunsinh Chauhan, SP Rajesh Gadhiya, and District Collector Amit Prakash, were present at the site to oversee the efforts.
