In a dramatic escalation of hostilities in South Asia, the Indian Air Force launched precision strikes under 'Operation Sindoor' on terror infrastructure in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK), avenging the deadly Pahalgam terrorist attack that claimed numerous Indian lives. As New Delhi reasserted its long-standing policy of pre-emptive counter-terror operations, US President Donald Trump, in his first official response, termed the situation &ldquo;a shame&rdquo; and offered to mediate, calling for both India and Pakistan to halt further attacks.
The strikes, which dismantled at least nine terror camps reportedly affiliated with proscribed outfits such as Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT), Jaish-e-Mohammed (JeM), and Hizbul Mujahideen, mark a strategic signal of India&rsquo;s evolving doctrine&mdash;one that refuses to allow proxy terror to go unanswered. Carried out with clinical precision, Indian officials described the operation as a message not only to Islamabad but to the broader international community: that Indian sovereignty and civilian safety are non-negotiable.
Speaking from the Oval Office, President Trump expressed concern over the spiralling tensions. &ldquo;It&rsquo;s so terrible. My position is that I get along with both. I know both very well, and I want to see them work it out. I want to see them stop. And hopefully they can stop now, they&rsquo;ve gone tit for tat. But I know both, we get along with both countries very well&hellip; and if I can do anything to help, I will be there,&rdquo; he said.
While the US maintains strategic ties with both New Delhi and Islamabad, Washington&rsquo;s approach under Trump has often leaned towards transactional diplomacy. His comments reflect a familiar pattern of American attempts to remain influential yet non-committal in subcontinental affairs. That said, the US has increasingly found convergence with India on counter-terrorism objectives, especially post-26/11 and Pulwama, while Pakistan&rsquo;s safe haven policy for anti-India jihadist groups continues to strain bilateral trust with Washington.
Unsurprisingly, the strikes provoked a combative reaction from Pakistan. Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, addressing the nation late Wednesday evening, vowed retribution. &ldquo;Pakistan will take revenge. We will take this war to the end,&rdquo; he declared in a televised address, striking a tone that mixed populist rhetoric with defiance.
Sharif&rsquo;s speech came after Pakistan&rsquo;s National Security Committee authorised its armed forces to respond &ldquo;at a time, place, and manner of its choosing&rdquo;&mdash;a phrasing that has become boilerplate in such crises, yet signals preparation for escalation. In reality, Pakistan faces mounting economic and political pressure, which may constrain the extent of its response. Nonetheless, its military posturing remains calibrated to project resolve domestically, even as it courts international sympathy by positioning itself as a victim of Indian aggression.
New Delhi, for its part, has maintained a studied silence post-operation, underscoring its focus on counter-terrorism rather than war rhetoric. Senior Indian officials have reiterated that the strikes targeted non-civilian assets used to launch cross-border terrorism, asserting India&rsquo;s right to self-defence under Article 51 of the UN Charter.
While Trump's offer to mediate may play well with domestic US audiences and some international observers, Indian policymakers are unlikely to entertain any third-party role. India has long maintained that all issues with Pakistan, including Kashmir, are bilateral in nature and subject to the Simla Agreement&mdash;a position that has only hardened in the wake of persistent cross-border terror.
The larger strategic message from New Delhi is clear: deterrence through action, not words. In contrast, Islamabad appears locked in a familiar script&mdash;denial, deflection, and threats of reprisal, all while seeking global intervention.
As both nations mobilise public narratives and strategic assets, the international community must tread cautiously. The risk of escalation remains acute, and yet, the path to sustainable peace lies not through hasty mediation, but through dismantling the infrastructure of terror that continues to destabilise the region.
