US President Donald Trump&rsquo;s latest remarks claiming he used trade negotiations to avert conflict between India and Pakistan have stirred a diplomatic stir in New Delhi, reviving longstanding concerns over foreign meddling in the Kashmir dispute.
While addressing the press at the White House, Trump stated that his administration had "brokered a full and immediate ceasefire" between the two nuclear-armed neighbours following a recent military standoff involving drones and long-range missiles. The American president further claimed that trade was used as a strategic lever to bring both sides to the table.
However, Indian officials have pushed back strongly, asserting that the ceasefire agreement was a product of direct military-level communication&mdash;between the Directors General of Military Operations (DGMOs)&mdash;and categorically denied any role played by a third party, let alone via trade diplomacy.
India Reaffirms Bilateral Nature of Kashmir Dispute
India has consistently rejected any third-party involvement in the Kashmir issue, a position rooted in the 1972 Simla Agreement. The Indian foreign policy establishment views Trump's repeated offers to mediate as unwelcome interference in a sovereign matter.
"The understanding to cease hostilities was achieved bilaterally," said a senior official, reiterating India&rsquo;s long-held stance that Kashmir is a bilateral issue, not subject to international negotiation.
Tharoor Critiques Trump&rsquo;s Narrative as 'Misguided and Harmful'
Congress MP and former diplomat Shashi Tharoor was among the most vocal critics of Trump&rsquo;s statement. In a detailed post on social media, Tharoor outlined why the remarks were not only diplomatically inappropriate but also potentially damaging to India&rsquo;s global position.
&ldquo;This is deeply disappointing for India,&rdquo; Tharoor wrote, warning that Trump's comments risk unravelling diplomatic gains built over decades.
Eroding Moral Clarity on Cross-Border Terrorism
Tharoor&rsquo;s first criticism was that Trump&rsquo;s remarks equated India and Pakistan as equal parties in the conflict, ignoring Pakistan&rsquo;s state-sponsored terrorism in Jammu &amp; Kashmir. Such moral ambiguity, Tharoor said, dilutes the global understanding of who the aggressor truly is.
Rewarding Bad Faith with Diplomatic Space
Secondly, Tharoor cautioned against offering a negotiation platform to Pakistan while it continues to shelter terrorist groups. &ldquo;India will never negotiate with a terrorist gun pointed at its head,&rdquo; he declared, reiterating New Delhi&rsquo;s policy of no talks under threat.
Reviving the Push to Internationalise Kashmir
Trump&rsquo;s suggestion to mediate, according to Tharoor, plays directly into the agenda of those who seek to internationalise the Kashmir issue&mdash;a red line for Indian diplomacy. New Delhi views such overtures as undermining its sovereignty and encouraging external pressures on a deeply internal matter.
Undoing Two Decades of Diplomatic De-Hyphenation
Perhaps most notably, Tharoor flagged the strategic error of &ldquo;re-hyphenating&rdquo; India and Pakistan in the eyes of global powers. Since President Clinton&rsquo;s 2000 visit to South Asia, successive US administrations have consciously avoided treating India and Pakistan as a joint regional file. Trump&rsquo;s rhetoric, Tharoor argued, risks undoing this critical diplomatic shift.
A Broader Message on Sovereignty and Strategic Trust
Trump&rsquo;s Kashmir remarks arrive at a time when India and the US are deepening cooperation across defence, technology, and the Indo-Pacific. Yet, such statements sow distrust and cast a shadow on strategic convergence. For India, Kashmir remains not just a territorial matter but a test of its sovereign autonomy on the world stage.
As New Delhi continues to project itself as a decisive and self-reliant regional power, unsolicited offers of mediation from Washington are likely to remain not just unwelcome&mdash;but diplomatically provocative.
