A powerful earthquake struck the Drake Passage region on Thursday, the US Geological Survey (USGS) reported. Initially measured at magnitude 8, the quake was later revised to 7.5.
The tremor occurred at a shallow depth of 10.8 km, according to USGS. Meanwhile, Germany&rsquo;s Research Centre for Geosciences recorded the magnitude at 7.1, while India&rsquo;s National Centre for Seismology reported it as 7.4 at 36 km depth, timed at 7:46 am IST.
Though the US tsunami warning system did not issue an alert, Chile&rsquo;s Navy Hydrographic and Oceanographic Service advised precaution for the Chilean Antarctic territory. The Pacific Tsunami Warning Centre also noted possible hazardous waves within three hours along parts of Chile&rsquo;s coast.
The Drake Passage, situated between Cape Horn in South America and the South Shetland Islands of Antarctica, is a key waterway linking the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans.
This quake follows another powerful seismic event in Russia&rsquo;s Far East on July 30, when an 8.8 magnitude earthquake triggered tsunami alerts across the Pacific, with waves reaching Japan, Alaska, Hawaii, and warnings stretching to the Americas and New Zealand.
