After a brief lull, monsoon activity once again gained momentum in Gujarat on Friday evening, bringing widespread showers across several regions and prompting fresh alerts from the India Meteorological Department (IMD).
According to data released by the State government for the 24-hour period ending on the morning of August 16, as many as 10 talukas recorded rainfall of more than an inch. Dang topped the list with 3.15 inches, followed by Gir Somnath at 3.03 inches. Other significant rainfall figures included Maliya Hatina with 1.65 inches, Patan Veraval with 1.54 inches, Dolvan and Jamnagar at 1.42 inches each, Valia at 1.34 inches, Lodhika at 1.18 inches, while Vansda and Netrang both registered 1.14 inches.
Several more regions, such as Jetpur, Odinar, Vyara, Keshod, Visavadar, Mendarda, Rajkot, Umarpada, Bhanvad, Valod and Subir, received over half an inch of rainfall. As of 8 am on Saturday, Gujarat had achieved 65 per cent of its average monsoon rainfall recorded over the past decade.
In Ahmedabad, showers returned suddenly after weeks of relatively dry conditions. Although the skies remained cloudy throughout the day, rain began around 5 pm and grew more intense in the evening, accompanied by thunder and lightning in both eastern and western parts of the city. Maninagar witnessed the heaviest downpour, recording 71.50 mm of rain, of which over 66 mm fell in just one hour between 7 pm and 8 pm.
Other areas such as Vasna and Maktampura logged 68 mm and 60 mm respectively, with the heaviest showers occurring between 6 pm and 8 pm. Additional localities including Tagore Control, Sarkhej, Sarkhej Urban and Muni. Corp. each received more than an inch of rain. By contrast, places like Nikol, Ramol, Kathwada, Usmanpura, Chandkheda, Ranip, Bodakdev, Science City, Gota and Chandlodiya did not record any rainfall up to 8 pm.
The Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation confirmed that two gates of the Vasna Barrage on the Sabarmati River were raised by 1.5 feet after the inflow exceeded 3,800 cusecs from the Narmada Canal. To maintain balance, over 2,800 cusecs of water were discharged downstream into the river.
With the monsoon showing signs of revival, the IMD has placed 19 districts under an orange alert, warning of heavy rain with strong winds. The districts under this category include Junagadh, Gir Somnath, Amreli, Bhavnagar, Dahod, Panchmahal, Kheda, Vadodara, Chhota Udepur, Narmada, Bharuch, Surat, Tapi, Dang, Navsari, Valsad, Dadra and Nagar Haveli, and Daman.
The rest of Gujarat has been placed under a yellow alert, where only light to moderate rainfall is expected.
As per the forecast, rainfall will continue through the weekend and into the next week. On August 16, heavy showers are likely in Banaskantha, Patan, Mehsana, Sabarkantha, Gandhinagar, Aravalli, Kheda, Ahmedabad, Anand, Panchmahal, Dahod, Mahisagar, Vadodara, Chhota Udepur, Narmada, Bharuch, Surat, Dang, Tapi, Navsari and Valsad. On August 17, the districts forecasted to experience heavy rainfall include Sabarkantha, Aravalli, Panchmahal, Dahod, Mahisagar, Chhota Udepur, Narmada, Surat, Dang, Tapi, Navsari and Valsad.
