At least four people lost their lives in Jammu and Kashmir&rsquo;s Doda district on Tuesday following relentless rainfall that has worsened the flood situation across the Jammu division.
Officials confirmed that two people were killed when their house collapsed due to the downpour, while two others died in flash floods caused by rising water levels in the district.
&ldquo;There has been widespread damage to houses and property in several areas. Rescue and relief efforts are being carried out with full preparedness,&rdquo; authorities said.
Residents in low-lying and hilly regions have been advised to remain cautious as intermittent rainfall continues. Rivers and seasonal streams in the Jammu division have swelled dangerously, with major rivers like the Tawi and Ravi flowing above danger levels.
At 9.15 a.m., the Tawi River was recorded at 24.97 ft, surpassing the 20 ft flood level and breaching the 23.4 ft evacuation mark. In Kathua district, the Ravi River has inundated several villages including Bagthali, Massos Pur, Keerian Gandial, Barni, Dhanna, Dhanore, and Karyali, forcing residents to stay on high alert.
The Ujh River is also nearing danger levels, while the Basantar in Samba district has already crossed its danger mark. Roads and bridges have suffered extensive damage, with parts of the Paddar road in Kishtwar district washed away near Traith Nallah.
Traffic through Sinthan Top, which connects the Valley with Kishtwar, has been suspended, and a flash flood was reported in Neeru Nallah at Bhaderwah. Authorities have launched evacuation operations to move people to safer areas.
Meanwhile, the Srinagar-Jammu national highway has been closed due to landslides in Ramban, while heavy snowfall at Zojila Pass has blocked the Srinagar-Leh highway. Snowfall has also been reported from parts of Ladakh and the higher reaches of Bandipora.
Chief Minister Omar Abdullah chaired a high-level meeting on flood preparedness and said he would travel to Jammu to oversee the situation. &ldquo;The situation in many parts of Jammu province is quite serious. I&rsquo;ll be taking the next available flight from Srinagar to Jammu to personally monitor the developing situation. Instructions have been issued to release additional funds for emergency restoration and relief,&rdquo; the CM posted on X.
Emergency helplines have been activated in all affected districts. Police, irrigation, flood control, health, and emergency services remain on high alert. Officials have directed that no staff engaged in flood protection can take leave except for medical emergencies.
The Meteorological Department has forecast heavy to very heavy rain in Jammu and moderate to heavy rain in Kashmir. Authorities have urged citizens to stay away from embankments, nallahs, and landslide-prone areas. The District Magistrate of Jammu also issued an advisory on X: &ldquo;Citizens of Jammu are requested to stay away from Tawi River banks. The water levels may reach danger mark within a short period of time.
