The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a warning of heavy to very heavy rainfall across Gujarat in the coming days, particularly in Saurashtra and Kutch, while central and southern districts are also forecast to witness scattered downpours.
Authorities have advised fishermen to stay away from the sea until August 28 due to unsafe weather conditions.
According to data from the State Emergency Operations Centre in Gandhinagar, Gujarat has already received 84 per cent of its average seasonal rainfall. Region-wise, north Gujarat leads with 87.43 per cent, followed by south Gujarat at 86.41 per cent, Kutch at 85.08 per cent, Saurashtra at 83.51 per cent, and east-central Gujarat at 79.08 per cent.
Reservoir levels across the state are also rising steadily. The Sardar Sarovar Dam, a key source of Gujarat&rsquo;s water supply, is currently 84 per cent full, storing 2,83,431 million cubic feet of water. In total, 206 reservoirs now hold 4,36,135 million cubic feet, which accounts for 78.18 per cent of their combined storage capacity.
Officials confirmed that 67 reservoirs have crossed full capacity, while another 27 are between 90 and 100 per cent, placing 94 reservoirs on high alert. Additionally, 27 reservoirs are between 80 and 90 per cent capacity and 19 more have been put under warning.
To tackle possible monsoon-related emergencies, 12 NDRF teams and 20 SDRF teams have been stationed across different districts. So far, 5,191 people have been shifted to safer areas, while 966 have been rescued from low-lying flood-prone regions.
In the past 24 hours, rainfall was reported in 225 talukas across the state. The highest rainfall was recorded at Sankheda in Chhota Udepur district with 102 mm (4.02 inches), followed by Umarpada in Surat at 99 mm (3.90 inches), Idar in Sabarkantha at 98 mm (3.86 inches), Vyara in Tapi at 90 mm (3.54 inches), and Dabhoi in Vadodara at 80 mm (3.15 inches). Both Danta in Banaskantha and Radhanpur in Patan received 79 mm, while Khedbrahma in Sabarkantha registered 78 mm.
Several other locations recorded 50&ndash;70 mm of rainfall, including Maliya (Morbi), Dediapada (Narmada), Jamkandorna (Rajkot), Dhrangadhra (Surendranagar), Mahuva (Surat), and Valod (Tapi). Meanwhile, 25&ndash;50 mm showers were reported in parts of Vadodara, Aravalli, Gandhinagar, Mehsana, Panchmahal, Navsari, and several areas of Saurashtra. Lighter spells of 1&ndash;20 mm were seen in Kutch, Botad, Bhavnagar, Amreli, and adjoining districts.
Between 6 am and 10 am today, both Balasinor in Mahisagar district and Vijaynagar in Sabarkantha recorded over two inches of rainfall. Meteorologists have predicted that moderate to heavy showers will continue across many parts of Gujarat in the coming days.
