The Sardar Sarovar Narmada Dam is filling rapidly after days of heavy upstream inflows. By 3 pm on Saturday, its level touched 136.74 metres, just below the full reservoir level of 138.68 metres. The dam is now holding 8,850.40 million cubic metres of water, or 93.16 per cent of its total capacity.
In the past 24 hours, the level rose by 13 cm. To ease pressure, authorities opened 15 gates up to 1.85 metres, releasing 2.45 lakh cusecs into the Narmada river. Current inflows are pegged at 2,06,515 cusecs, with 23,501 cusecs diverted into the main canal to replenish reservoirs across Gujarat. Officials said the sustained inflows from persistent rainfall will secure the state&rsquo;s water supply.
<h5 data-start="927" data-end="956">Other Dams Under Stress</h5>
Ukai, the state&rsquo;s second-largest reservoir, has crossed its August-end rule level of 102.11 metres, standing at 102.40 metres. With inflows of over 1.1 lakh cusecs, six gates have been opened to 1.83 metres, discharging 94,000 cusecs into the Tapi river. Kadana Dam has reached 91.86 per cent of its storage, releasing more than 53,000 cusecs downstream. Dharoi is 83 per cent full, with 11,000 cusecs flowing into its catchment.
<h5 data-start="1391" data-end="1431">Heavy Rainfall Batters Panchmahals</h5>
Panchmahals district bore the heaviest downpour of the day. Halol taluka alone received 6.69 inches of rain in two hours between 6 am and 8 am, which rose to 9.76 inches by 2 pm. Umreth in Anand recorded 4.72 inches, while Borsad saw 3.07 inches. Jambughoda and Ghoghamba in Panchmahals, along with Savli in Vadodara and Kamrej in Surat, also reported over 1.5 inches during the morning. In all, 74 talukas had recorded rainfall by early afternoon.
The downpour left stretches of road between the bus station and Pavagadh waterlogged, making it difficult for devotees to reach the Mahakali Mata temple. In response, four gates of the Dev Dam in Panchmahals were opened, releasing 7,623 cusecs into the Dev river at Waghodia. Villages downstream have been put on alert for possible flooding.
According to the India Meteorological Department, heavy to very heavy rainfall is expected across Gujarat until September 5.
