The special investigation team (SIT) probing the death of singer Zubeen Garg has filed a complaint with the Assam Police Crime Branch against Independent MLA Akhil Gogoi for allegedly circulating unverified documents related to the charge sheet on social media.
A senior official said the circulation of such documents is illegal and could mislead the public, creating unnecessary confusion about the high-profile case. Gogoi, the MLA from Sivasagar, is accused of sharing documents online and claiming they were part of the official charge sheet filed against seven accused persons.
The nine-member SIT, led by Special Director General of Police Munna Prasad Gupta, submitted the charge sheet before the Chief Judicial Magistrate of Kamrup on December 12. Legal sources pointed out that the court has not yet issued certified copies of the charge sheet to applicants and that it has only been shared with the accused and their family members.
According to officials, SIT investigating officer Rosie Kalita submitted the complaint seeking registration of an FIR against Gogoi. The Crime Branch is currently examining the complaint and will decide on further action.
In a social media post, Gogoi stated that he has been informed that a case has been filed against him for releasing the charge sheet to the public. He added that despite being unwell, he would travel to Guwahati to face the legal proceedings.
The SIT has charged the singer&rsquo;s secretary Siddhartha Sharma, festival organiser Shyamkanu Mahanta, and band members Shekhar Jyoti Goswami and Amritprava Mahanta with murder. Shyamkanu Mahanta, who organised the North East India Festival in Singapore attended by Garg, died under mysterious circumstances while swimming in the sea on September 19.
Zubeen Garg&rsquo;s cousin and suspended Assam Police officer Sandipan Garg has been charged with culpable homicide not amounting to murder. Two personal security officers, Nandeswar Bora and Prabin Baishya, have been charged with criminal conspiracy and breach of trust.
All the accused have been arrested and are currently lodged in various jails across Assam.
