The prospective allocation follows the successful execution of&nbsp;Operation Sindoor, which underscored the Indian Armed Forces&rsquo; growing precision and strategic reach in retaliatory operations.
This potential enhancement, expected to be introduced via a supplementary budget later this year, would take the overall defence outlay past the ₹7 lakh crore threshold&mdash;a historic first. The current Union Budget for FY 2025&ndash;26 had already earmarked ₹6.81 lakh crore for defence, a 9.2% increase over the previous year&rsquo;s ₹6.22 lakh crore. This trajectory aligns with the government&rsquo;s long-standing emphasis on bolstering national security and military modernisation since 2014.
The proposed supplementary funding is expected to support multiple facets of India&rsquo;s defence preparedness. These include investments in indigenous research and development, accelerated procurement of next-generation weaponry, replenishment of strategic ammunition reserves, and acquisition of cutting-edge platforms across domains.
Sources indicate that a formal proposal for parliamentary approval is likely to be introduced during the Winter Session. If cleared, this would mark yet another chapter in the steady expansion of India&rsquo;s military budget, which has more than tripled since the Modi government first assumed office. The Defence Ministry continues to command the largest share among all ministries, accounting for over 13% of the total national budget.
The impetus for this fiscal acceleration is rooted in the strategic and operational success of&nbsp;Operation Sindoor, launched in response to the Pahalgam terror attack of 22 April. The cross-border precision strikes targeted key terror launchpads and logistics nodes in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir, in what defence officials have hailed as a calibrated yet forceful message.
Beyond its tactical impact,&nbsp;Operation Sindoor&nbsp;highlighted the growing synergy between India&rsquo;s traditional military prowess and emergent technologies. The operation witnessed extensive deployment of indigenous systems, notably the Akash missile batteries, which reinforced India&rsquo;s layered air defence grid. The performance of Akash&mdash;often likened to Israel&rsquo;s Iron Dome&mdash;reaffirmed the credibility of the country&rsquo;s &lsquo;Make in India&rsquo; defence drive.

Earlier this week, the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) conducted successful trials of&nbsp;Bhargavastra, an indigenous anti-drone system operating in &lsquo;hard kill&rsquo; mode. The tests, held at the Seaward Firing Range in Gopalpur, Odisha, validated the system&rsquo;s ability to neutralise hostile drones using micro-rockets, offering a cost-effective solution to the growing aerial threat landscape.
