An experienced paragliding pilot was killed and a tourist injured after a tandem paraglider crashed at the internationally renowned Bir Billing site in Himachal Pradesh’s Kangra district. The incident occurred on Friday evening, prompting authorities and operators to suspend all paragliding activities for a day as a mark of respect.
The accident took place shortly after a tandem paraglider took off from the Billing launch point. Soon after becoming airborne, the paraglider reportedly developed a technical malfunction, lost balance mid-air and crashed near the road below the launch site.
The pilot, identified as Mohan Singh, a resident of Barot in Mandi district, sustained critical injuries in the crash. The accompanying tourist was also injured. Local residents and rescue teams rushed to the spot and shifted both to a nearby hospital. Singh, however, succumbed to his injuries on the way, while the tourist was reported to be out of danger after receiving first aid.
Following the incident, a case was registered and an investigation was initiated to ascertain the exact cause of the crash. Authorities are examining whether the accident was triggered by a technical fault, human error, or weather-related factors.
The incident has once again raised concerns over safety standards at adventure sports destinations, particularly the need for regular equipment checks, pilot certification, and strict adherence to safety protocols.
Officials said that all relevant documents and details related to the flight have been sought from the marshals and technical advisors stationed at the site. Further action will be taken based on the findings of the investigation report.

A fierce encounter between Assam Rifles personnel and militants broke out along Manipur’s India–Myanmar border on Friday, with security operations continuing through the day, officials said.
A defence spokesperson and a police official confirmed that a patrolling unit of the Assam Rifles came under fire from terrorists on Friday morning.
The troops responded with “controlled and cautious fire” to ensure civilian safety, the spokesperson said.
Additional forces have been deployed to the area, and the operation remains in progress. Further details are awaited.
Manipur shares a 398 km unfenced border with Myanmar, making it highly vulnerable to cross-border militant movement, infiltration by inimical elements and large-scale drug smuggling.
In separate joint operations, security forces have arrested six individuals, including five militants of the banned Kangleipak Communist Party (KCP), allegedly involved in extortion in Imphal East and Imphal West districts.
Police officials said the cadres had been targeting the public, contractors, government employees, petrol pumps, private schools and colleges across the Imphal valley.
Among those arrested, KCP member Khulem Robindro Singh (36) was reportedly involved in recruiting youths for the outfit.
In another operation, security forces arrested Yumnam Chandra Singh (42), also known as Baby, from Kontha Ahallup Makha Leikai in Imphal East.
Two high-power 36 HE grenades, a mobile phone and an Aadhaar card were recovered from his possession.
Security forces continue extensive crackdowns across multiple districts, with search operations and area domination drives underway in fringe, mixed-populated and vulnerable regions.
A total of 115 nakas and checkpoints have been set up across valley and hill districts to curb illegal movement of suspicious individuals and vehicles.
Escorts are also being provided to trucks carrying essential commodities along the Imphal–Jiribam National Highway (NH-37), with convoy protection strengthened on sensitive stretches.
Manipur Police urged residents to avoid spreading rumours or circulating unverified content online.
“The veracity of any circulation of unfounded videos or audio clips may be confirmed from the Central Control Room. Uploading and circulating fake posts on social media will attract legal action,” a police statement warned.

The 10-day Sangai Tourism Festival commenced on Friday at Hapta Kangjeibung in Imphal amid heightened tension, protests and clashes that left two police officers injured.
According to officials, a Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) was among those hurt when security forces clashed with demonstrators in Imphal East district.
The protestors, including several internally displaced persons (IDPs), attempted to march toward the festival venue, prompting security personnel to block their movement.
Stones were reportedly hurled at the forces, who responded with several rounds of tear gas.
Manipur Governor Ajay Kumar Bhalla inaugurated the festival in a subdued ceremony.
The event faced widespread opposition from the Coordinating Committee on Manipur Integrity (COCOMI), which had earlier announced a cease-work protest and urged the public to boycott the festival.
COCOMI convenor Khuraijam Athouba had said the festival is “not meant for the people, but for some individuals’ vested interest who can manage financial benefit for organising the festival”.
This year’s edition marks the return of the Sangai Festival after a two-year suspension due to ethnic violence between the Meitei and Kuki-Zo communities.
Attendance remained sparse on Friday, with government employees and security personnel forming most of the audience.
Many stalls were shut, and only a few government-run stalls functioned partially.
Several civil society organisations, valley-based groups and IDPs have opposed holding the festival while thousands remain in relief camps and tensions continue.
They have demanded that the government prioritise resolving the ongoing conflict and rehabilitating displaced families before celebrating any public event.
In Bishnupur district, hundreds of IDPs attempted to march back to their original homes in neighbouring Churachandpur district.
Security forces halted them near Phougakchao Ikhai, deploying barricades, barbed wire and parked vehicles to prevent further movement.
Tear gas was again used to disperse the group.
Earlier, the Manipur government issued an appeal seeking cooperation from citizens.
Chief Secretary Puneet Kumar Goel described the Sangai Festival as a symbol of “our commitment to moving forward together”, emphasising its role in economic revival, tourism promotion, youth empowerment and community harmony.
Goel noted that the government spends ₹18 crore per month on IDP relief and that ₹523 crore has been allocated under a Special Relief Package from the Centre.
Of this, ₹180 crore is earmarked for house restoration and ₹250 crore for rebuilding public infrastructure in resettlement areas.
He maintained that while rehabilitation of IDPs remains the government’s top priority, the festival is crucial for boosting local trade, artisans, craftsmen and farmers, and for accelerating economic activity.
Former ministers and BJP MLAs Bishwajit Singh and Basanta Kumar Singh were among those present at the venue.

A major scare was reported at Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International (IGI) Airport on Tuesday after a bus caught fire near an aircraft at Terminal 3.
The bus, operated by AISATS — a ground handling company — was completely vacant at the time of the incident, officials confirmed.
According to airport authorities, the fire broke out around 1 pm when the CNG-powered passenger bus, parked on the airside of Terminal 3, suddenly caught fire.
The airport’s Aircraft Rescue and Fire Fighting (ARFF) team immediately responded and extinguished the flames within minutes.
“In a stray incident, a bus operated by one of the ground handlers caught fire around noon today. Our expert ARFF team swung into action and extinguished the fire within a couple of minutes. The bus was stationary and vacant at the time of the incident. There were no injuries or casualties, and airport operations remain normal. Passenger and staff safety is our top priority,” Delhi Airport said in an official statement.
Deputy Commissioner of Police (IGI) Vichitra Veer confirmed that the fire was reported at around 1:00 pm.
“Fire tenders, local police, and CISF personnel rushed to the scene to contain the blaze. The bus was not carrying passengers or luggage, and only the driver was inside at the time,” he said.
Visuals from the site showed the bus engulfed in flames just a few metres from an Air India aircraft.
The fire was fully controlled within 2–3 minutes, preventing any damage to nearby planes or airport infrastructure.
Authorities are now conducting an inspection to determine the exact cause of the fire.

St Rita’s Public School in Palluruthy reopened on Wednesday after remaining closed for two days following a dispute over an eighth-grade student wearing a hijab.
The school had declared holidays on Monday and Tuesday due to tensions between the management and the student’s parents.
The controversy began when the school, citing its 30-year-old uniform policy, barred the Muslim student from wearing a headscarf, claiming it affected uniformity.
The principal stated that the student had followed the dress code for several months but had recently begun wearing an additional piece of clothing over it.
According to the student’s father, the school objected to the hijab even at the gate, prompting him to file complaints with the District Education Officer and Kerala Education Minister V. Sivankutty.
Following the complaint, the minister intervened and directed the school to permit the student to attend classes while wearing her hijab.
He also instructed the school management to ensure emotional support for the student and her family.
A report by the Ernakulam Deputy Director of Education termed the school’s earlier actions as “serious misconduct” and a violation of the Right to Education Act.
Earlier, the Kerala High Court had granted police protection to the school amid the ongoing controversy.

A bus carrying pilgrims from Gujarat to Kedarnath Dham overturned on the Tehri-Ghansali motor road on Wednesday, leaving 18 people injured, including three seriously. The incident took place in the afternoon near Daba Khale Naame Toke, approximately 1.5 kilometres past Tipri, when the driver allegedly lost control of the vehicle, which was travelling at high speed.
The impact of the crash caused panic among the passengers, all of whom were part of the Char Dham Yatra. Local villagers who witnessed the incident immediately contacted police and emergency services. Swift response teams, including the police, reached the site to carry out rescue operations.
Three of the injured – a woman, a child, and one other passenger – suffered severe injuries and were transported to the Primary Health Centre in Nandgaon using a 108 ambulance. Fifteen others with minor injuries received medical aid on-site.
All the occupants of the bus were pilgrims from Gujarat, travelling from Uttarkashi towards Kedarnath, one of the main destinations of the Char Dham pilgrimage. Authorities stated that the group had arranged the vehicle in Haridwar three days prior to the journey.
The police have confirmed that the condition of the rest of the travellers is being monitored, and additional support was provided at the scene.
This incident adds to a string of recent road mishaps in Uttarakhand. On Sunday, two individuals sustained serious injuries after their car plunged into a deep gorge at Kolukhet Pani Wala Band, located along the Mussoorie-Dehradun route. The victims were rescued with assistance from local residents and transferred to a medical facility in Dehradun.
Earlier, on May 27, four senior citizens lost their lives when their vehicle veered off the road and fell around 50 metres into a gorge in Tehri district. The victims had been returning from Badiyar Garh to Malgad after a religious function.
The driver reportedly failed to navigate a narrow bend, resulting in the fatal crash. Emergency personnel from the Tehsil administration and the State Disaster Response Force retrieved the bodies and transported them to Srinagar’s base hospital.

Telangana’s cabinet will witness its first expansion since December 2023, with three legislators from the ruling Congress party scheduled to be sworn in as ministers on Sunday. G Vivek Venkata Swamy, Adluri Laxman Kumar, and Vakiti Srihari are to be inducted during a ceremony at Raj Bhavan at 12 noon, as confirmed by media reports.
Chennur MLA Vivek Venkata Swamy, Dharmapuri MLA Adluri Laxman Kumar, and Makthal MLA Vakiti Srihari have been selected to join the ministerial ranks. Dornakal MLA Jatoth Ramachandru Naik is set to take charge as Deputy Speaker of the Telangana Legislative Assembly.
Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy extended congratulations to the appointees, posting on X to convey his wishes to Ramachandru Naik on his new role.
The appointments come following prolonged discussions with the Congress’s national leadership in Delhi, concluding several weeks of uncertainty surrounding the cabinet expansion.
Chief Minister Revanth Reddy, along with Telangana Congress president B Mahesh Kumar Goud, engaged in consultations with the AICC over the final list of ministers and internal appointments in the state party unit. The selections are intended to reflect the government’s emphasis on ensuring social representation across communities.
Since the Congress formed the government in December last year, six cabinet posts have remained unfilled out of the 18 permitted under the Constitution. Eleven ministers were appointed shortly after the new government assumed office, leaving substantial lobbying and contention for the remaining six positions. With three now filled, three vacancies remain.
All three ministers being inducted are first-term MLAs. While Vivek Venkata Swamy previously served as a Member of Parliament between 2009 and 2014, this is his debut term as an MLA. Adluri Laxman Kumar and Vakiti Srihari are also serving their first legislative terms.
The new ministers represent a cross-section of marginalised communities: Vivek is from the Mala Scheduled Caste, Laxman is from the Madiga subcaste of the Scheduled Castes, and Srihari belongs to the Mudiraj community under the Backward Classes. Ramachandru Naik, the new Deputy Speaker, is a member of a Scheduled Tribe.
The Congress high command’s decision on the expansion was reportedly at odds with the preferences of the Chief Minister. Revanth Reddy had persistently sought the inclusion of Bodhan MLA P Sudarshan Reddy, reportedly proposing him for the Home portfolio.
His request, however, was not accommodated, with party sources indicating that delays in the expansion were due in part to Revanth’s insistence on his candidate rather than any indecision at the central level.
When the official communication reached Hyderabad on Sunday morning listing the names of Vivek, Laxman, and Srihari, Sudarshan Reddy was notably absent. Reddy’s repeated appeals, including an offer to support any other MLAs alongside Sudarshan, were reportedly set aside. Party insiders revealed that state unit president B Mahesh Kumar Goud had also opposed Sudarshan Reddy’s inclusion, further complicating the Chief Minister’s position.
Among the strategic considerations in the selection was caste representation. Vivek was offered a cabinet role as part of an earlier commitment made during his induction into the party. To ensure balanced representation within the Scheduled Castes, the party allocated a position to the Madiga sub-group by selecting Laxman Kumar. Vakiti Srihari’s appointment is believed to have been supported directly by Congress national president Mallikarjun Kharge.
In a clear indication of the party’s stance, the Congress leadership conveyed that no legislator from a forward caste would be considered for the remaining cabinet positions. Komatireddy Rajagopal Reddy, MLA from Munugode, was among those excluded despite prior assurances when he rejoined the Congress from the BJP. The decision not to include him was linked to his brother Komatireddy Venkat Reddy’s existing cabinet role as Minister for Roads and Buildings.
Deputy Chief Minister Mallu Bhatti Vikramarka also failed to secure a position for Mancherial MLA A Premsagar Rao, who belongs to the Velama community, a forward caste. Rao had publicly voiced his displeasure over being sidelined, particularly after Vivek’s name emerged as a likely appointee.
At a public event attended by Vikramarka and IT Minister D Sridhar Babu, Premsagar warned that he might explore options outside the Congress if left out of the cabinet. Despite this, the central leadership, disapproving of any public dissent, chose not to entertain such demands and reiterated its policy of excluding forward caste candidates from the current round of appointments.
The final decision came after detailed deliberations led by Telangana in-charge Meenakshi Natarajan, who consulted with MLAs and held one-on-one discussions with Chief Minister Revanth Reddy to assess the suitability of candidates.

A sub-inspector from Madhya Pradesh Police has been taken off field duty and reassigned to the Police Lines following the emergence of a video in which he allegedly directed a gym owner to deny access to Muslims. The incident took place in the Ayodhya Nagar locality of Bhopal and has sparked widespread reaction.
The officer, Dinesh Sharma, is seen in the video telling the gym operator, “No Muslim will come here to train or take training. I am telling you this clearly.” The footage quickly went viral on social media, prompting a departmental inquiry into his conduct.
Authorities reported that tensions began when members of the Bajrang Dal, a right-wing group, visited the gym and objected to the employment of Muslim trainers. Police were summoned to the location to manage the situation. It was during this intervention that Sharma allegedly made the controversial statement.
A senior official confirmed that Sharma had been deployed to ensure law and order following the arrival of members from pro-Hindutva groups.
“The SI had reached the spot because the members of the pro-Hindutva organisations turned up, and his presence was necessary to maintain law and order. We are investigating the allegations. Right now, he has been sent to police lines,” the official said.
Following the inquiry, Sharma was officially removed from active field duties on Monday and attached to the Police Lines. Officials emphasised that any act contributing to communal discord would not be tolerated.
In the aftermath, Bhopal’s Member of Parliament from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), Alok Sharma, told reporters on Sunday that a compilation of gym instructors’ details was underway. “The list of gym trainers will be handed over to the police, who will act according to the law,” he stated.
He also remarked that women patrons should only be instructed by female trainers.
The incident drew criticism from Congress MLA Arif Masood, who questioned the justification for singling out gym professionals based on their faith. “Is running a gym now a crime? If it’s being run following rules, then what is the problem?” he asked.
The issue has not been limited to Bhopal. Similar objections to Muslim trainers have reportedly surfaced in Indore. This trend is said to have accelerated after the arrest of Mohsin Khan, a shooting coach accused of operating an unauthorised academy and allegedly involved in cases of rape and molestation.

Bhopal Cop Removed Over Communal Gym Entry Remarks

For the first time, a state government relief fund has been authorised to receive foreign donations under the Foreign Contribution (Regulation) Act (FCRA), 2010, following the approval of the Maharashtra Chief Minister’s Relief Fund (CMRF) by the Union Ministry of Home Affairs.
This clearance allows the CMRF to legally accept financial contributions from abroad to support social initiatives, including aid for individuals affected by natural disasters, major accidents, communal disturbances, terrorist attacks, and those requiring financial assistance for education and healthcare.
Traditionally, such state-managed relief funds have operated solely through domestic contributions.
The CMRF, registered as a Trust under the Bombay Public Trusts Act, 1950, functions under the administration of the Government of Maharashtra. The Chief Minister of the State serves as the chairperson, exercising full authority and oversight over the fund’s operations. As outlined in a public tender issued in February, the fund processes between one lakh and 1.5 lakh transactions each year.
According to media reports, the CMRF, based at Mantralaya, Nariman Point, Mumbai, 400032, was granted FCRA registration after meeting all the stipulated requirements. The fund’s website states its primary objective is to provide immediate support to distressed individuals both within Maharashtra and across India.
It offers financial relief in the aftermath of natural calamities such as floods, droughts, and fires, and assists economically disadvantaged patients facing serious health conditions.
Under Indian law, any entity—be it an association, trust, or non-governmental organisation—seeking to receive contributions from foreign sources must obtain registration under the FCRA. The legislation, first introduced in 1976, was replaced by a revised Act in 2010 and further updated in 2020. It governs the receipt and use of foreign funds for purposes that are social, educational, religious, economic, or cultural in nature.
Once registration is granted, all foreign remittances must be directed into a dedicated “FCRA Account” established at the State Bank of India’s Parliament Street branch in New Delhi. Recipients are also required to submit detailed annual returns and disclose all assets—both movable and immovable—acquired using foreign funds.
The Ministry of Home Affairs monitors foreign donations under the FCRA to safeguard national security interests. This year alone, 244 NGOs and associations have been approved for registration, including the Ramakrishna Mission in Kolkata, the Ramakrishna Mission Hospital in Itanagar, and seven Buddhist organisations. As of Friday, India had a total of 16,141 FCRA-registered NGOs.
In contrast, the Prime Minister’s Citizen Assistance and Relief in Emergency Situations Fund (PM CARES), established in March 2020 to manage crises such as the COVID-19 pandemic, was not subject to the FCRA and was provided with a separate mechanism to receive foreign donations.
In 2018, India notably declined offers of international assistance following devastating floods in Kerala, maintaining its policy of self-reliant disaster response. The Maharashtra CMRF's FCRA licence marks a shift in this approach, enabling a state-level relief fund to tap into foreign aid for the first time.

In a landmark moment for the nation’s educational journey, Mizoram became the first fully literate state under the Central government’s ULLAS (Understanding Lifelong Learning for All in Society) initiative, Chief Minister Lalduhoma announced here on Tuesday.
The announcement was made with pride by the Chief Minister at a celebratory event here. While addressing the gathering, he said that Tuesday marks a historic moment in the journey of Mizoram state, one that would be remembered by generations to come.
He emphasised that this achievement is not just a statistic, but “a transformational milestone, one that speaks to the collective will, discipline, and vision of our people.”
Union Minister of State for Education, Skill Development and Entrepreneurship Jayant Chaudhary and the state’s Education Minister Vanlalthlana graced the occasion.
Lalduhoma further expressed that this was a collective accomplishment by citizens who love their state and work with dedication, highlighting especially the 1,692 individuals who, despite having missed earlier educational opportunities, demonstrated extraordinary determination and a will to learn, even in later stages of life.
“We celebrate this day not as the end of a campaign, but as the dawn of a new era of opportunity, empowerment, and inclusion,” he said.
The Chief Minister noted that while today may not mark the conclusion of the literacy movement, “We also renew our commitment to sustaining literacy through continuous education, digital access, and vocational skill training.”
He called on all Mizos to dream bigger and aim higher: “Let this be just the beginning. Let us now aim higher, digital literacy, financial literacy, and entrepreneurial skills for every Mizo.”
Reiterating the pride of the moment, Lalduhoma declared: “We are proud to be the first, and we will work to remain the best.”
He concluded with an inspiring vision: “Let this declaration ignite a new wave of learning and empowerment. Together, we move forward — towards a smarter, stronger, and more inclusive Mizoram.”
Union Minister Jayant Chaudhary congratulated the people of Mizoram on this remarkable achievement and commended the dedication of all stakeholders involved.
He praised the state’s commitment to inclusive growth through education and expressed confidence that Mizoram would continue to lead the way in lifelong learning and skill development.
“This is a proud day not just for Mizoram, but for the entire nation,” the Central Minister said, extending his best wishes for the state’s continued journey towards excellence in education and empowerment.
Mizoram’s recognition as the first fully literate state was declared under the Ministry of Education’s ULLAS initiative, which mandates a minimum literacy rate of 95 % of the population.
According to the Periodic Labour Force Survey (PLFS 2023–2024), Mizoram has reached a literacy rate of 98.2 %. This landmark achievement is the result of sustained efforts by the School Education Department, particularly through Samagra Shiksha and the New India Literacy Programme (Nav Bharat Saksharta Karyakram).
The state government established a governing council and executive committee under the State Literacy Mission Authority, with the State Project Office under Samagra Shiksha Mizoram spearheading the initiative.
To support the mission, the State Centre for Literacy (SCL) was set up under SCERT. It developed Mizo language learning materials titled Vartian, along with an English version for learners in the Lawngtlai district.
Additional resources, such as Romei for learners and Margdarshikha for Volunteer Teachers, were created. Cluster Resource Centre Coordinators (CRCCs) acted as surveyors for the New India Literacy Programme, identifying 3,026 illiterate individuals aged 15 and above, of whom 1,692 expressed a willingness to learn.
According to the 2011 census, literacy level was 93.91 % in Kerala and 91.58 % in Mizoram, among the most literate states in the country. The national literacy rate, according to the 2011 census, was 74.04 %.
