Normal traffic resumed on the Mumbai-Pune Expressway early Thursday after a massive 33-hour disruption that left thousands of commuters stranded. The congestion began Tuesday evening when a tanker carrying highly inflammable propylene gas overturned in the hilly Khandala Ghat section.
Authorities first emptied the tanker before removing it near the Adoshi tunnel in the early hours of Thursday. Traffic on the Mumbai-bound carriageway was restored at around 1:46 am once safety checks were completed.
The prolonged blockade caused severe hardship for travellers across the roughly 90-kilometre corridor between Mumbai and Pune. At its worst, queues of stationary vehicles stretched up to 20 kilometres. Many passengers, including women and children, were stuck inside vehicles for hours without access to food, drinking water, or toilets.
Officials transferred nearly 21 tonnes of propylene gas into another tanker before clearing the accident site, prioritising safety due to the hazardous nature of the cargo.
In response to the large-scale disruption, Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis ordered an inquiry and directed the Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation (MSRDC) to submit a detailed report with recommendations to better manage such emergencies in the future.
The incident has once again raised concerns about disaster preparedness and infrastructure management on one of India’s busiest expressways.

A massive avalanche struck the popular tourist destination of Sonamarg in Jammu and Kashmir late Tuesday night, triggering panic but causing no loss of life, officials said. The avalanche hit the resort area in central Kashmir’s Ganderbal district at around 10.12 pm.
Authorities confirmed that, despite the scale of the snowslide, no casualties or injuries were reported. Dramatic visuals of the avalanche quickly surfaced on social media, showing a peaceful valley moments before a large cloud of snow engulfed roads and buildings within seconds. The area appeared deserted at the time, with no pedestrians visible.
The incident came amid heavy snowfall across the Kashmir Valley, which severely disrupted daily life on Tuesday. Flight operations at Srinagar airport were suspended, with all incoming and outgoing flights cancelled due to poor visibility and continuous snowfall. Passengers were advised to reschedule their travel plans with airlines.
Road connectivity was also badly affected. The 270-kilometre Srinagar-Jammu national highway was closed after heavy snow accumulation and slippery conditions between Banihal and Qazigund. Traffic movement was suspended in both directions as a precautionary measure.
Several other key routes, including the Mughal Road, Srinagar-Leh highway, Sinthan Road, and other interior roads, have remained closed since heavy snowfall on January 22–23. Normal life in Srinagar and surrounding towns was disrupted, with thin traffic, reduced business activity, and minimal pedestrian movement as residents stayed indoors.
Officials advised commuters to remain cautious and avoid unnecessary travel. Authorities had issued advance warnings of a high-risk avalanche situation in the region a day before the incident. The Jammu and Kashmir Union Territory Disaster Management Authority had sounded alerts for multiple districts across both Kashmir and Jammu regions due to increased avalanche risk following sustained snowfall.
Weather conditions are expected to improve from Wednesday, and travellers have been advised to check the latest road and flight updates before planning their journeys.

At least eight people were killed and five others injured after a private bus plunged into a deep gorge in Himachal Pradesh’s Sirmaur district on Thursday, triggering large-scale rescue operations. Police said the death toll could rise as several passengers sustained serious injuries.
The bus was travelling from Solan towards Haripurdhar when it reportedly lost control and fell nearly 200 feet off the road, landing upside down near the Haripurdhar area. There were around 30 to 35 passengers on board at the time of the accident.
Residents rushed to the spot immediately after the crash and began rescue efforts even before emergency teams arrived. Visuals circulating on social media showed people attempting to pull injured passengers out of the wreckage.
Sirmaur Superintendent of Police Nishchit Negi confirmed eight fatalities so far and said rescue and evacuation operations were launched without delay. Police, disaster response teams and local administration officials are working together to clear the site and assist victims.
The injured have been shifted to nearby hospitals, including facilities at Dadahu, Sangrah and Nahan, where medical teams have been placed on high alert. Industry Minister and local MLA Harshwardhan Chauhan said the district administration is fully prepared to handle the emergency.
Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu expressed deep sorrow over the loss of lives and directed officials to provide all possible assistance to the families of the deceased. He also instructed authorities to ensure the best medical care for the injured and wished them a speedy recovery.
The exact cause of the accident is yet to be determined, and investigations are underway.

At least ten people lost their lives in separate road accidents across Maharashtra over the past two days, highlighting growing concerns over road safety in the state.
In the deadliest incident, four people were killed and six others injured in a head-on collision between two cars in Nashik district on Wednesday afternoon. The accident took place on a national highway in Dindori taluka near the Chachadgaon toll plaza around 3 pm.
Police said an Ertiga car travelling from Nashik towards Peth collided head-on with a Scorpio SUV coming from the opposite direction. Three of the deceased were residents of Devgarh in Rajasthan’s Rajsamand district and were travelling in the SUV. They were identified as Chogalal Hiralal Gurjar (75), Kishanlal Hiralal Gurjar (45) and Poonam Gurjar (40). The fourth victim was the Ertiga driver, Shahrukh Khan Farakat Khan (28), a resident of Silvassa in Dadra and Nagar Haveli.
Six people sustained injuries in the crash and were admitted to Nashik District Hospital and a private hospital. Both vehicles were severely damaged due to the impact.
In another incident, three people died on Monday afternoon after their motorcycle collided head-on with a Maharashtra State Road Transport Corporation (MSRTC) bus in Buldhana district. The accident occurred on the Dhad–Sambhajinagar road near Kardi village. The victims, all residents of Dhalsawangi, died on the spot as the motorcycle was crushed and got stuck beneath the bus. The bus driver has been arrested, and an investigation is underway.
Meanwhile, a 45-year-old motorcyclist was killed in a separate road accident in Beed district on Monday. The incident took place on the Kada–Limbodi road in Ashti tehsil. The deceased, identified as Anil Mohan Khilare, was a resident of Sangvi Patan village and the sole earning member of his family.

Road Accidents in Maharashtra Claim Ten Lives

At least seven people have died and nearly 150 have been hospitalised in Madhya Pradesh’s Indore after consuming contaminated drinking water, triggering an emergency response from the state government and sharp criticism over civic lapses.
The deaths, reported since December, are linked to a diarrhoea outbreak caused by polluted water supply in the Bhagirthpura area. Indore Mayor Pushyamitra Bhargava confirmed that while the health department officially recorded three deaths, four more patients admitted to hospitals later succumbed to the illness.
District Magistrate Shivam Verma said doctors have confirmed four fatalities due to the outbreak, adding that 149 people are currently undergoing treatment across 27 hospitals in the city.
According to Chief Medical and Health Officer Madhav Prasad Hasani, patients reported symptoms such as vomiting, diarrhoea and severe dehydration after consuming contaminated water. Preliminary investigations suggest the contamination occurred due to a leakage in the main water pipeline located beneath a toilet, allowing sewage to mix with the drinking water supply.
Officials found that a toilet had been constructed over the main water line in Bhagirthpura, which likely led to the contamination after a pipeline leak developed.
In response, the state government has taken disciplinary action against officials linked to the lapse. Zonal officer Shaligram Shitole and in-charge assistant engineer Yogesh Joshi have been suspended, while deputy engineer Shubham Srivastava has been dismissed from service.
The issue first surfaced on December 25, when residents complained of a foul smell in their water supply, according to local councillor Kamal Baghela. Although problems had been reported earlier, the situation worsened significantly that day.
Health authorities conducted door-to-door surveys of 2,703 households and examined nearly 12,000 people following reports of the outbreak. A three-member inquiry committee headed by IAS officer Navjeevan Panwar has been constituted to investigate the incident.
Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Mohan Yadav visited hospitals in Indore, describing the situation as “emergency-like” and assuring coordinated efforts for timely treatment. He announced a compensation of ₹2 lakh for the families of the deceased and warned of strict action against those found responsible.
The Madhya Pradesh High Court has also intervened, directing the state government to provide free treatment to affected patients and submit a status report by January 2 while hearing a public interest litigation related to the incident.

The Indian government has imposed an additional excise duty on tobacco products effective 1 February 2026, making cigarettes more expensive for an estimated 10 crore smokers across the country.
The Finance Ministry has notified the Chewing Tobacco, Jarda Scented Tobacco, and Gutkha Packing Machines (Capacity Determination and Collection of Duty) Rules, 2026. Under the new framework, cigarettes will be subject to an excise duty ranging from ₹2,050 to ₹8,500 per 1,000 sticks, depending on their length.
The announcement triggered a sharp reaction in the stock market. Shares of ITC, the country’s largest cigarette maker and market leader with brands such as Gold Flake and Classic, declined around 2%. Godfrey Phillips India, which distributes Marlboro cigarettes in India, fell by over 4%. ITC also emerged as the top loser on the Nifty 50 index and led losses in the FMCG sector.
The new excise duty comes in addition to the 40% Goods and Services Tax already applicable on cigarettes and other tobacco products. It replaces the GST compensation cess, which will be discontinued as part of the government’s broader effort to rationalise the indirect tax regime.
From February 2026, pan masala and cigarettes will continue to attract 40% GST, while bidis will be taxed at 18%. A Health and National Security Cess will be levied on pan masala, and tobacco and related products will face additional excise duty.
Parliament had cleared two bills in December, allowing the government to introduce the new cess on pan masala manufacturing and reintroduce excise duty on tobacco products. The government has now formally set 1 February 2026 as the implementation date, marking the end of the existing GST compensation cess.

Images and videos circulating on social media have raised questions over a possible leak of the Common Law Admission Test (CLAT) 2026 question paper. The material shows screenshots of a Telegram group named “CLAT Exam 2026”, where a pinned message claims that users who paid money were provided the question paper and answer key through personal chats.
The pinned message, written in Hindi, stated that those who had made payments had already received the paper and answers privately. Notably, Telegram messages usually display an “edited” label when altered, but the messages shown from the group do not carry this indicator, adding to the speculation around their authenticity.
The posts have triggered mixed reactions online. Several users have demanded a thorough investigation and called for a re-examination if the allegations are found to be true. Others, however, have dismissed the claims, arguing that public Telegram groups can be manipulated using methods that allow backdating of messages or editing of images, making such screenshots unreliable.
The issue has drawn attention amid heightened concerns over examination integrity. Authorities overseeing the CLAT examination have been contacted for clarification on the alleged leak, but no official response has been issued so far. Meanwhile, the circulating content continues to fuel debate and uncertainty among aspirants awaiting clarity on whether the examination process has been compromised.

For millions of people, satellites are invisible helpers keeping phones connected, planes on course, families online during wars and disasters. But a new intelligence assessment has sparked fears that the space above us could soon turn hostile.
Western intelligence agencies believe Russia is exploring a weapon designed not to hit one satellite, but to poison entire orbits. The idea is chilling in its simplicity: release clouds of tiny metal pellets into space, creating a moving minefield that could cripple satellite networks like Elon Musk’s Starlink.
For ordinary people, the impact would be immediate and deeply personal. Internet connections could fail without warning. Emergency communications could go dark. Navigation systems guiding aircraft, ships, and even ambulances could be disrupted. What happens in orbit would not stay in orbit.
Experts warn such an attack would not discriminate. The debris could damage civilian, military, and commercial satellites alike, including Russia’s own. Once unleashed, the chaos could spiral beyond control, turning low Earth orbit into a dangerous junkyard for years.
Some analysts believe the threat itself may be the weapon, a warning shot meant to intimidate rivals rather than be used outright. But even the possibility has rattled space agencies and governments, underscoring how fragile modern life has become when so much depends on technology circling silently above our heads.
As space becomes the next frontier of conflict, the question facing the world is stark: who protects the sky, when breaking it could hurt everyone?

Australia’s landmark law banning social media access for users under 16 has triggered sweeping action across major platforms, with Meta beginning to remove minors from Instagram, Facebook and Threads ahead of the December 10 deadline. The company said it was “working hard” to identify and block young users, acknowledging that the process would remain “ongoing and multilayered.”
The legislation requires 10 platforms including TikTok, YouTube and Twitch, to take “reasonable steps” to block underage users or face penalties up to 49.5 million AUD. Instagram alone is estimated to have more than 350,000 Australian users aged 13 to 15, all of whom are likely to be affected. Some platforms such as WhatsApp, Pinterest and Roblox remain exempt for now.
While Meta said it would comply fully, the company pressed for systemic reform, arguing that app stores should handle age verification and parental consent. YouTube raised sharper concerns, claiming the new rules could leave minors “less safe” by pushing them to browse without logged-in protections, a position Australia’s communications minister dismissed as “weird” and insufficient.
The government insists the crackdown is vital, pointing to cases where harmful algorithmic content exacerbated mental health crises among teens. Digital rights groups, however, have challenged the law as a threat to free expression. As Australia becomes the first nation to attempt such sweeping age restrictions, regulators worldwide from Europe to Malaysia, are watching closely.

IndiGo, India’s largest airline, continued to struggle with severe operational disruptions on Thursday as flight delays and cancellations entered their third consecutive day. Passengers across major airports reported long queues, overcrowded terminals, and little clarity on revised schedules as the airline grappled with widespread shortages of crew and operational challenges.
The disruptions have hit major hubs including Delhi, Bengaluru and Hyderabad. The airline acknowledged that its network has been heavily impacted over the past two days due to multiple factors such as technical issues, adverse weather, high airport congestion and the implementation of revised Flight Duty Time Limitations (FDTL), which came into effect in November.
At Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International Airport, more than 30 outgoing flights were cancelled on Thursday, according to media reports. Bengaluru’s Kempegowda International Airport reported 73 IndiGo cancellations, while sources at Hyderabad’s Rajiv Gandhi International Airport indicated that up to 33 outbound and 35 inbound flights were expected to be cancelled during the day.
Several passengers took to social media to express frustration, citing delays extending up to 12–22 hours, lack of communication and last-minute cancellations that left many stranded overnight.
The airline’s primary challenge appears to be a shortage of crew following the enforcement of updated FDTL rules by India’s aviation regulator, DGCA. The revised norms aim to reduce pilot fatigue by ensuring longer rest periods, stricter night-duty limits and a cap on the number of night landings.
Under the new guidelines, pilots are entitled to a minimum weekly rest of 48 hours and extended definitions of night duty hours. While these regulations enhance safety, they have significantly affected crew availability across airlines, with IndiGo being the most impacted due to its extensive flight network.
As cancellations continue to pile up, passengers are advised to monitor flight notifications closely. IndiGo has assured that it is working to stabilise operations, but delays may persist until crew scheduling improves under the new FDTL framework.
