Buzz around the sequel to Kalki 2898 AD has reignited excitement, especially over casting news following Deepika Padukone’s departure from the project. While the filmmakers and production house Vyjayanthi Movies have stayed silent, industry sources indicate that Sai Pallavi is now being considered to play the role of SUM-80 after Deepika exited the sequel.
Deepika Padukone, who appeared as SUM-80 (Sumathi) in Kalki 2898 AD, will not be part of the sequel. She exited the project in September 2025, with Vyjayanthi Movies explaining that they “couldn’t find a partnership” with her for the follow-up film.
According to a representative of the film who spoke to Hindustan Times, nothing has been officially finalised, but makers are considering Sai Pallavi for the role formerly played by Deepika. They clarified that reports about Sai being locked in or shooting starting soon are just rumours until an official announcement is made.
Another entertainment report notes the speculation and fan discussion around Sai Pallavi’s potential involvement, highlighting ongoing debate in industry circles about the casting direction.
Deepika’s exit from the sequel was officially confirmed by the production house, which said they parted ways due to commitment issues and an inability to align terms on the project.
Earlier reports suggested that Deepika’s role in the sequel may have been reduced to more of a cameo than a central part, which contributed to her decision to step away from the film.
In the first film, SUM-80 (Sumathi) is a key character, a pregnant lab subject tied to the overarching mythos of Kalki 2898 AD. She escapes captivity and becomes central to the narrative’s dramatic cliffhanger.
Kalki 2898 AD was released in June 2024 and was a major box-office success, earning over ₹1,000 crore worldwide, making the sequel one of the most anticipated films in Indian cinema.
