The Defence Acquisition Council (DAC) has approved defence procurement proposals worth ₹3.60 lakh crore, including the acquisition of 114 Rafale fighter jets from France’s Dassault Aviation, in a major step toward strengthening India’s military capabilities.
For the Indian Air Force (IAF), the Acceptance of Necessity (AoN) covers Multi-Role Fighter Aircraft (MRFA), advanced combat missiles, and Air-Ships Based High-Altitude Pseudo-Satellites (AS-HAPS). A significant portion of the fighter jets is expected to be manufactured domestically, supporting indigenous defence production.
The MRFA induction is aimed at enhancing air dominance across varied combat scenarios while reinforcing long-range strike capability and overall deterrence. Meanwhile, the combat missiles are intended to improve stand-off attack strength with deeper reach and higher precision. The AS-HAPS platforms will support continuous intelligence gathering, surveillance, electronic monitoring, telecommunications, and remote sensing for military operations.
The clearance comes days before French President Emmanuel Macron’s scheduled visit to India, underscoring growing defence cooperation between the two nations.
The decision is particularly significant as the IAF’s fighter squadron strength has dropped to 29, well below the sanctioned level of 42. With the MiG-21 retired and several older aircraft such as early MiG-29 variants, Jaguars, and Mirage 2000 approaching the end of their service life, the new acquisition is expected to address capability gaps.
The DAC also cleared proposals for the Indian Army, including the procurement of Vibhav anti-tank mines designed to slow enemy mechanised advances, and the overhaul of armoured recovery vehicles, T-72 tanks, and BMP-II infantry combat vehicles to extend operational life and readiness.
For the Indian Navy, approvals include a 4 MW marine gas turbine-based electric power generator under the Make-I category to reduce reliance on foreign manufacturers and strengthen self-reliance. Additionally, the procurement of P8I long-range maritime reconnaissance aircraft is set to enhance anti-submarine warfare, surveillance, and maritime strike capabilities.

The Indian Army has assumed full responsibility for monitoring aerial activity within a 35-kilometre belt along India’s borders and up to a height of three kilometres, marking a major shift in counter-drone operations. The move comes in response to the growing use of surveillance and armed drones by hostile forces along the western and northern frontiers.
This enhanced role is part of a broader overhaul of military preparedness following Operation Sindoor. Alongside changes in deployment strategy, the Army has introduced rocket regiments and strengthened its drone warfare capabilities. Nearly 97% of all drone and anti-drone operations within this defined airspace are now being handled by the Army.
To support this expanded mandate, new air command and control centres are being set up along the borders with Pakistan and China. These centres will track cross-border drone movements, deploy Indian drones, and neutralise hostile aerial platforms. Coordination between Army Corps Commanders and Indian Air Force commanders will ensure seamless integration of intelligence, air assets, and other agencies.
The Army is also working towards deploying around 10,000 drones in the western theatre and over 20,000 drones along the 3,488-kilometre Line of Actual Control. This push follows incidents during Operation Sindoor, when Pakistan used Turkish and Chinese-origin armed drones to target Indian military formations. On the eastern front, the People’s Liberation Army continues to employ drones extensively to monitor Indian positions along the LAC.
In parallel, the Army has inducted two rocket force units, two combined armed brigades known as Rudra brigades, and 21 Bhairav battalions. The operational range of Indian artillery brigades has been significantly enhanced, extending from 150 kilometres to nearly 1,000 kilometres. These steps mirror regional developments, including China’s deployment of rocket regiments in eastern Ladakh after its 2020 incursions and Pakistan’s use of Fatah-series rockets during Operation Sindoor.
Operation Sindoor was launched in the early hours of May 7, targeting terrorist infrastructure and military installations in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir before a ceasefire came into effect on May 10. The confrontation saw the use of fighter jets, missiles, armed drones, and intense artillery exchanges.
The induction of Bhairav battalions reflects a refined operational doctrine. While Special Forces will focus on deep strategic missions using armed drones and loitering munitions, Bhairav units will handle tactical operations along the borders.
These changes come amid Pakistan’s continued acquisition of advanced drones, radars, missiles, and rockets, underscoring India’s push to reinforce its border security architecture against evolving aerial and missile threats.

A two-seater microlite aircraft of the Indian Air Force made a forced landing in an uninhabited area of Uttar Pradesh’s Prayagraj on Wednesday after developing a technical malfunction during a routine sortie, officials said.
The aircraft had taken off from Air Force Station Bamrauli and was flying towards the Phaphamau and Sangam areas when it encountered an engine-related issue. The pilots initiated emergency procedures and executed a controlled landing in a pond near KP College in the George Town police jurisdiction.
Both pilots on board were rescued safely, and no injuries were reported. Authorities confirmed that there was no damage to civilian life or property as the aircraft landed away from densely populated areas.
Local police, fire brigade personnel and residents assisted in the rescue operation, with divers playing a key role in safely retrieving the pilots from the waterlogged site. The area was subsequently cordoned off to ensure public safety.
In a statement shared on social media, the Indian Air Force confirmed that a recovery system was activated and both pilots were safe. The IAF has ordered a Court of Inquiry to determine the exact cause of the technical failure.
Microlite aircraft are typically used by the Air Force for training, reconnaissance related to bird activity, and survey missions. Further investigation into the incident is currently underway.

India’s Defence Export Moment Has Arrived

For decades, India was seen primarily as one of the world’s largest importers of arms. That perception is now visibly shifting. The dispatch of the first batch of guided Pinaka rockets to Armenia on 18 January 2026 is more than a commercial transaction; it is a geopolitical signal. It reflects India’s growing credibility as a producer of sophisticated, reliable and combat-relevant weapon systems, and its emergence as a serious player in the international defence market.
From Southeast Asia to the Caucasus, and from Africa to Latin America, Indian-origin defence platforms are steadily finding buyers. The Armenia deal, however, stands out for its scale, symbolism and strategic consequences.

Pinaka and the Armenia Signal

Armenia’s purchase of India’s indigenous Pinaka Multi-Barrel Rocket Launcher (MBRL) system marks the first major foreign induction of this platform. The deal includes three variants and four batteries, forming part of a broader defence partnership that now runs into hundreds of millions of dollars. Deliveries of launchers began in mid-2023 and were completed by late 2024, while guided rockets have now started reaching Armenian inventory in early 2026.
Armenia’s interest is not cosmetic. It is driven by hard security realities. The country remains locked in a volatile strategic environment following successive conflicts with Azerbaijan over Nagorno-Karabakh (Artsakh). Despite ceasefire arrangements and recent political agreements, the military balance in the South Caucasus remains deeply uneven. Azerbaijan outspends Armenia by a wide margin, invests heavily in drones, precision munitions and air power, and continues joint exercises with Turkey and other partners.
Against this backdrop, Yerevan’s turn towards India is not accidental. It reflects a deliberate effort to diversify away from overdependence on Russia, whose reliability has been increasingly questioned in Armenian strategic circles. India, in contrast, offers systems that are comparatively affordable, adaptable to existing Soviet-era infrastructure, and free from intrusive political conditionalities.

What Makes Pinaka a Serious Battlefield System

The credibility of any defence exporter rests on the credibility of its product. Pinaka’s strength lies in both its engineering and its operational logic.
Developed indigenously, the system has evolved into a family of rockets with multiple ranges and roles. Earlier versions offered ranges of around 37–40 km. Today, guided variants offer ranges of approximately 75 km, with extended-range versions reaching up to 120 km, and even longer-range concepts under development. Guidance packages combining inertial navigation and satellite correction give Pinaka a degree of precision that traditional area-weapon rocket artillery lacked.
The system’s ability to unleash a rapid salvo — twelve rockets in under a minute — makes it suitable for suppression, counter-battery fire, disruption of logistics nodes and battlefield shaping. For a country like Armenia, facing the challenge of deterring a numerically superior adversary, such systems offer not just firepower but psychological and strategic signalling value.
If Pinaka demonstrates effectiveness in real operational environments, its export value will rise exponentially. Combat credibility, more than brochures or exhibitions, shapes the global arms market.

India’s Defence Export Trajectory

Pinaka is not an isolated success. Over the last decade, India’s defence export ecosystem has matured significantly. Indigenous platforms and systems that have attracted foreign interest include:

BrahMos supersonic cruise missile, already exported to Southeast Asia

Akash surface-to-air missile systems, under consideration by multiple countries

Advanced Towed Artillery Gun System (ATAGS)

Coastal surveillance radars supplied to island nations

Patrol vessels, offshore platforms and fast attack craft built by Indian shipyards

Electronic warfare systems and radars developed by domestic firms

What is changing is not only the volume but the perception. India is no longer selling surplus or downgraded equipment; it is exporting frontline indigenous systems.

Armenia, Azerbaijan and the Geopolitical Context

The Armenia–Azerbaijan conflict is not merely territorial; it is rooted in history, identity and competing national narratives. Nagorno-Karabakh has deep emotional significance for both societies. Wars in the early 1990s, in 2020, and the dramatic events of 2023 led to massive displacement and reshaped regional realities.

Azerbaijan, buoyed by energy revenues and external partnerships, has pursued an aggressive military modernisation programme, acquiring drones, aircraft, artillery and air defence systems from multiple suppliers. Armenia, with more limited resources, has had to pursue a more selective and strategic procurement path.
Its outreach to India is therefore strategic, not symbolic. Contracts now extend beyond Pinaka to include artillery, anti-tank weapons, air defence components, anti-drone technologies and training cooperation. For India, this creates a rare opportunity: a long-term defence partner whose operational needs can shape Indian systems and whose battlefield environment can validate Indian technology.

Strategic Implications for India

Defence exports are no longer just about revenue. They are instruments of statecraft.
By supplying arms to Armenia, India expands its influence into the strategically sensitive South Caucasus, a region intersecting Russian, Turkish, Iranian, European and American interests. It demonstrates India’s willingness to act as an autonomous strategic actor rather than a passive observer. It also strengthens India’s image as a reliable partner for smaller states seeking alternatives to traditional great-power suppliers.
There is also a domestic impact. Every successful export deal strengthens India’s defence industrial base, supports private sector players, encourages innovation, and reduces unit costs for the Indian armed forces themselves.

If Pinaka Performs, India’s Brand Transforms

The global arms market is unforgiving. Buyers look for three things: reliability, effectiveness and political consistency. If Pinaka performs credibly in operational conditions — whether through deterrent presence or battlefield use — India’s reputation will shift from “emerging supplier” to “proven exporter”.

That transition is critical. Countries in Africa, West Asia, Latin America and parts of Eastern Europe are actively searching for alternatives to Western systems (often expensive and politically constrained) and Chinese systems (often viewed with suspicion). India, offering competitive pricing, flexible diplomacy and increasingly mature technology, sits in a strategically advantageous position.

From Import Dependence to Export Confidence

The shipment of Pinaka rockets to Armenia should be seen as a milestone, not an endpoint. It symbolises a broader transformation: India’s movement from defence dependence to defence influence.
For decades, India aspired to strategic autonomy. Defence exports are now becoming one of its practical expressions. If nurtured with consistency, quality control and long-term vision, India’s defence industry can evolve into not just a commercial success story, but a pillar of national power projection.
The world is beginning to take notice. And in places like Yerevan, India’s weapons are no longer theoretical capabilities — they are now part of real strategic calculations.

Jammu and Kashmir Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha on Sunday chaired a high-level security review meeting to assess winter preparedness, law and order, and counter-terrorism measures in the aftermath of the recent blast in Delhi.
The meeting was attended by Chief Secretary Atal Dulloo, senior officials of the Jammu and Kashmir Police, the Army, central security forces, and intelligence agencies.
Officials reviewed the situation along the Line of Control (LoC) and the International Border (IB), ongoing counter-terrorism operations, and developments linked to the recently busted “white collar” terror module involving doctors from Jammu and Kashmir and Uttar Pradesh, according to official sources.
Director General of Police Nalin Prabhat presented a detailed briefing based on district-level reviews conducted over the past weeks.
He outlined progress in counter-terror operations, improvements to the intelligence network, and community policing initiatives.
The L-G considered these assessments and recommendations while formulating the security strategy for the coming months.
A comprehensive review was also conducted on the situation following the November 10 terror blast near the Red Fort, which killed 15 people and injured 10 others.
The attack was carried out by Dr Umar Nabi, who detonated an explosive-laden car and subsequently evaded arrest.
His two associates, Dr Adil Rather of Kulgam’s Qazigund and Dr Muzammil Ganai of Pulwama, had earlier been arrested in Faridabad during the operation to dismantle the module.
Security measures across Jammu and Kashmir have since been intensified, with increased patrolling and deployment at strategic locations.
Enhanced monitoring has been put in place along key routes, including the Srinagar–Jammu National Highway, particularly in Pulwama and Qazigund.
Police have also stepped up inspections of establishments dealing in chemicals, fertilisers, explosives, hardware, and automobile repair to prevent misuse of materials.
Ten individuals have so far been arrested in connection with the Delhi blast case.
They include Dr Adil Rather, Dr Muzammil Ganai, Dr Shaheen Shahid of Uttar Pradesh and her brother Molvi Irfan, Amir Ali, Jasir Bilal, Dr Umar Farooq and his wife Shahzada Akhtar, and Tufail Ahmad, an electrician.
Investigators have linked them to various roles in the attack, including procurement, technical support, and facilitation.
Amir Rashid Ali was arrested after it was found that the car used in the blast was registered in his name, while Jasir Bilal Wani, alias Danish, allegedly provided technical assistance to the bomber.
The investigation, transferred to the National Investigation Agency by the Union Home Ministry, is proceeding in coordination with Jammu and Kashmir Police and law enforcement agencies from other states.

Two terrorists were killed by security forces in an ongoing encounter in the Keran sector of Kupwara district, officials confirmed on Saturday.
The operation was launched jointly by security agencies on Friday following specific intelligence inputs regarding a possible infiltration attempt along the Line of Control (LoC).
Alert troops detected suspicious movement near the border and challenged the infiltrators, who opened indiscriminate fire.
The forces retaliated, leading to an exchange of gunfire.
In a post on X, Chinar Corps stated, “Operation PIMPLE, Keran, Kupwara: On 07 Nov 2025, based on specific intelligence input from agencies, regarding infiltration attempt, a joint operation was launched in the Keran sector of Kupwara. Alert troops spotted suspicious activity and challenged which resulted in terrorists opening indiscriminate fire. Contact established and terrorists trapped.”
The post further added, “Two terrorists have been neutralised by the security forces in the ongoing operation.”
Officials said the search operation continues as security personnel comb the area to rule out the presence of more infiltrators.
Earlier on October 14, two terrorists were killed when the Indian Army foiled an infiltration bid along the LoC in Kupwara district.
At that time, alert troops had noticed suspicious movement near the border and swiftly responded to prevent the breach.
Jammu and Kashmir shares a 740-kilometre-long Line of Control, while the International Border spans 240 kilometres.
The LoC passes through Baramulla, Kupwara, and Bandipora districts in the Valley, as well as parts of Jammu district, while the International Border extends across Jammu, Samba, and Kathua districts.

The United States has signalled a shift toward greater troop flexibility in South Korea, with Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth stating that American forces stationed there could be deployed in regional conflicts beyond the Korean Peninsula.
During his visit to South Korea on Tuesday, which included a trip to the Demilitarised Zone (DMZ), Hegseth reaffirmed that protecting against North Korea remains the alliance’s top priority but acknowledged the evolving regional security landscape.
“There’s no doubt that flexibility for regional contingency is something we would take a look at,” Hegseth said while standing alongside South Korean Defence Minister Ahn Gyu-back.
Hegseth noted that the 28,500 US troops based in South Korea might be used in broader regional conflicts, including potential tensions involving China.
US officials have previously indicated an intent to make their forces more adaptable to address emerging challenges, such as the defence of Taiwan and countering China’s expanding military presence.
While South Korea has resisted the idea of altering the role of US troops, it continues to enhance its own defence capabilities with the long-term goal of assuming wartime operational control over combined forces.
Hegseth also confirmed that both sides are working on a joint communique expected to outline defence costs and cooperation initiatives.
Meanwhile, South Korean President Lee Jae Myung, in his parliamentary address on Tuesday, announced a significant 8.2% rise in the country’s defence budget to 66.3 trillion won ($46 billion), marking its largest increase in six years.
Lee said the country will also triple spending on artificial intelligence, allocating 10.1 trillion won ($7 billion) to drive “a major transformation aimed at propelling South Korea into the ranks of the world’s top three AI powers” alongside the United States and China.
The overall budget plan totals 728 trillion won ($510 billion), an 8.1% increase from the previous year.
Hegseth added that the two nations have agreed to allow South Korea to maintain and repair US naval ships locally, enhancing regional readiness.
He also indicated that President Donald Trump supports South Korea’s ambition to develop nuclear-powered submarines, although he did not provide further details.
South Korea has previously stated that it could launch a nuclear-powered submarine by the mid-2030s if supplied with nuclear fuel from the United States.

President Droupadi Murmu’s flight in a Rafale fighter jet at Ambala Airbase on Wednesday morning was not merely a ceremonial sortie — it carried a sharp message to Pakistan.
Posing with Squadron Leader Shivangi Singh, one of India’s first women Rafale pilots, the President’s gesture symbolized strength and rebuttal.
Earlier this year, during Operation Sindoor in May — India’s military response to the terror attack in Jammu and Kashmir’s Pahalgam by Pakistan-based Lashkar-e-Taiba that killed 26 people — Pakistan’s media and propagandists falsely claimed to have captured Squadron Leader Shivangi Singh after “downing” a Rafale jet.
The claim was quickly proven baseless by Indian authorities.
On October 29, the same Varanasi-born pilot, Shivangi Singh, guided President Murmu through the Rafale fighter at the Ambala Air Force base in Haryana, turning Pakistan’s earlier falsehood into a moment of national pride.
During Operation Sindoor, Pakistan had circulated claims of shooting down Indian aircraft and capturing soldiers as “prisoners of war.” India firmly refuted these allegations, stating that no such losses occurred.
In fact, data released by the Indian military showed Pakistan had lost six of its own aircraft, including four U.S.-made F-16s and Chinese-origin JF-17 jets.
Indian Air Force Chief, Air Chief Marshal AP Singh, confirmed these details and led a formation sortie over Ambala on Wednesday.
President Murmu also took her first-ever Rafale sortie in a jet piloted by Group Captain Amit Gehani, while the Air Chief flew another Rafale alongside.
The aircraft took off at 11:27 a.m., soaring 15,000 feet above sea level at around 700 km/h, and completed a 30-minute, 200-kilometer circuit before returning safely to the Ambala Air Force Station.
Following the sortie, President Murmu shared her experience on X, writing,
“The sortie on Rafale is an unforgettable experience for me. This first flight on the potent Rafale aircraft has instilled in me a renewed sense of pride in the nation's defence capabilities. I congratulate the Indian Air Force and the entire team of Air Force Station, Ambala for organising this sortie successfully.”
This was not the President’s first time flying in a fighter aircraft — she had earlier taken a sortie in a Sukhoi Su-30MKI from Tezpur Air Force Station in Assam on April 8, 2023.
The Ambala sortie, however, carried symbolic weight — a visual reaffirmation of India’s air superiority and a subtle yet powerful counter to Pakistan’s propaganda.

Twin crashes from USS Nimitz raise operational questions

In a rare double incident, a U.S. Navy F/A-18F Super Hornet and an MH-60R Sea Hawk helicopter operating from the aircraft carrier USS Nimitz (CVN-68) crashed in the South China Sea on Sunday during separate routine operations, according to USNI News.
The U.S. Pacific Fleet confirmed that both aircraft were part of Carrier Strike Group 11, currently on deployment in the Indo-Pacific. The first accident occurred at approximately 2:45 p.m. local time, when a Sea Hawk helicopter, belonging to the “Battle Cats” of Helicopter Maritime Strike Squadron 73 (HSM-73), went down in the waters while conducting standard flight operations.
Search and rescue teams swiftly recovered all three crew members, who were found to be in stable condition.
Barely 30 minutes later, at 3:15 p.m., a two-seater F/A-18F Super Hornet from the “Fighting Redcocks” of Strike Fighter Squadron 22 (VFA-22) also crashed during a sortie from the same carrier. Both aviators ejected safely and were rescued by recovery teams assigned to the carrier group.
All personnel involved in both mishaps are reported to be safe and under medical observation, while the U.S. Navy has initiated a formal investigation to determine the cause of the dual accidents.
The USS Nimitz, one of the Navy’s oldest operational carriers, is currently on the final leg of its deployment, returning to the U.S. West Coast. The vessel had earlier participated in operations in the Middle East, responding to Houthi attacks on commercial shipping, before entering the South China Sea on 17 October, as reported by USNI News.
Though incidents involving naval aircraft are not uncommon during extended deployments, the near-simultaneous loss of two frontline assets from a single carrier raises questions about operational tempo, maintenance stress, and crew fatigue.
The USS Nimitz Carrier Strike Group continues operations in the region amid heightened U.S. presence in the Indo-Pacific and ongoing tensions over freedom of navigation and regional security.

In a move that could redefine the balance of nuclear deterrence, Russia has announced the successful test of its nuclear-powered intercontinental cruise missile, Burevestnik—a weapon so ambitious that its very name, meaning storm petrel, symbolises the approach of a global storm.
President Vladimir Putin confirmed on Sunday that the missile had been tested earlier in the week, completing a flight of nearly 14,000 kilometres in 15 hours. Russia’s Chief of the General Staff, General Valery Gerasimov, described it as “a unique weapon—one no other country possesses.”
The Burevestnik is unlike any conventional missile. Instead of relying solely on chemical fuel, it carries a miniaturised nuclear reactor that heats air to generate thrust. In theory, this could allow the missile to remain airborne indefinitely, circling the globe multiple times before striking its target.
What makes the development deeply unsettling for Western strategists is not just its range, but its stealth profile. Designed to fly at extremely low altitudes, the Burevestnik can evade most radar detection systems, slipping beneath conventional air-defence networks. For NATO, which has labelled it the SSC-X-9 Skyfall, this test signifies a new dimension in nuclear strategy—one where deterrence could come from a weapon with almost unlimited endurance and unpredictable trajectory.
ALSO READ: https://www.benefitnews24.com/international/putin-downplays-us-sanctions-warns-of-retaliation/21241
The test also signals that Russia’s long-troubled Burevestnik programme, which suffered a fatal setback during a 2019 Arctic recovery mission, may now be entering its final phase of operational readiness. Putin has instructed the armed forces to begin the deployment preparations, suggesting that Moscow considers the system combat-ready.
For Washington and European capitals, this marks a disturbing escalation in Russia’s strategic posturing. A nuclear-powered, nuclear-armed cruise missile that can traverse continents undetected poses an existential challenge to traditional defence doctrines.
If proven reliable, Burevestnik could indeed alter how the world perceives nuclear deterrence—ushering in an era where endurance replaces speed, and silence replaces visibility.
