Political campaigning across Maharashtra has intensified sharply as the state heads into the final days before the civic elections scheduled for January 15. Major parties have stepped up rallies, manifesto launches and public attacks, turning the last Sunday before polling into a decisive moment for voter outreach.
The ruling Mahayuti alliance led by the Bharatiya Janata Party released its manifesto for the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation elections, outlining promises focused on urban infrastructure, public transport, healthcare, housing and slum rehabilitation, environmental measures, and transparency in governance. The document was unveiled in the presence of Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis and Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde, with the alliance projecting continuity and large scale urban redevelopment as key priorities.
The elections will be held across 29 municipal corporations, including Mumbai, Thane, Pune, Nagpur and Nashik. For the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation alone, around 1,700 candidates are contesting 227 wards. Voting will take place from 7:30 am to 5:30 pm on January 15, with the state government declaring a holiday to ensure maximum voter participation. Results are scheduled to be announced on January 16.
Opposition parties have also sharpened their attacks. Supriya Sule of the Nationalist Congress Party questioned the ruling alliance over persistent civic issues in Thane, particularly water shortages and waste management, alleging that years of governance have failed to translate into basic improvements for residents.
In Pune, Shiv Sena (UBT) MP Sanjay Raut launched a scathing critique of the ruling parties, alleging the use of muscle power and criminal influence in candidate selection. He claimed the city, once known for its cultural reputation, was now being reduced to what he described as a &ldquo;city of goons,&rdquo; a remark that drew strong reactions from rival parties.
Political realignments have added another layer of drama to the campaign. Former MLA Dagdu Sakpal quit Shiv Sena (UBT) to join the Shinde led Shiv Sena, while several suspended Congress corporators from Ambernath moved to the BJP, signalling last minute shifts ahead of polling.
Symbolic moments have also marked the campaign. Thackeray cousins Uddhav Thackeray and Raj Thackeray held a joint rally in Nashik, their first together in two decades, with another rally planned as campaigning enters its final stretch. Meanwhile, Union Minister Piyush Goyal dismissed the reunion, questioning its political impact.
Campaigning has also taken on a popular touch, with actor and Shiv Sena leader Govinda canvassing in Mumbai&rsquo;s Kamathipura area, drawing crowds as parties seek to connect with voters on the ground.
With rallies, roadshows and door to door campaigns peaking, all major parties are making a final push to sway undecided voters. As Maharashtra prepares to vote, the civic elections are shaping up as a significant test of urban governance narratives and political alliances across the state.
